Born on 7 November 1950 in Delhi, she initially served as a professional nurse at Lady Hardinge Medical College before her life changed dramatically after the events of 1984. She was the wife of Beant Singh, one of the bodyguards involved in the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Following the incident, Bibi Bimal Kaur Khalsa faced detention, intense interrogation, and immense personal hardship while raising her three children during one of the most turbulent periods in Sikh history. Despite these challenges, she emerged as a strong political voice for Sikh rights and community concerns. After moving to Punjab in 1985, she became closely associated with Panthic politics and later contested the 1989 Lok Sabha elections on the Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) ticket. She achieved a historic victory from the Ropar constituency with a massive public mandate, becoming a symbol of resistance and Sikh political assertion. During her tenure in Parliament, Bibi Bimal Kaur Khalsa boldly raised issues related to illegal detentions, harassment of Sikh youth, farmers’ concerns, Punjab’s water rights, and controversial laws like TADA. Her speeches and fearless stand earned her deep respect among many Sikh organizations and supporters. She passed away on 2 September 1991 under mysterious circumstances in Mohali. While officially termed an accidental electrocution, many Panthic groups continue to view her death as suspicious. Even today, her legacy lives on through her family and supporters, making her an unforgettable chapter in Punjab’s political and Sikh history.
