On speculation surrounding the party's chief ministerial face for the next Assembly elections, Warring said he was not in the race for the post. He maintained that the decision would rest entirely with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and the party high command. "I am not in the race to become Chief Minister. Whoever the party decides upon, I will stand with that person," he said. Emphasising party discipline, Warring said senior leaders had acted responsibly despite the recent developments. However, he warned that anyone breaching discipline would face action. He also dismissed suggestions that the BJP could capitalise on the situation, asserting that the Congress remained united and would not allow political space for its rival in Punjab.
