A major controversy has erupted after the speech of Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj regarding Punjab’s newly enacted anti-sacrilege law. During his address, Giani Gargaj alleged that the Punjab Government passed the legislation without consulting Akal Takht Sahib, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, or any representative Sikh institution. The Jathedar stated that while the Sikh community supports strict punishment for those guilty of sacrilege, several controversial clauses of the Act appear to target granthis, sewadars, and gurdwara management committees instead of the actual offenders responsible for beadbi incidents. In a sensational claim during the speech, Giani Gargaj also alleged that representatives connected with the Government of Punjab approached Sikh leadership, including SGPC chief Harjinder Singh Dhami, regarding possible “setting” or compromise discussions over the issue. His remarks have sparked intense political and religious debate across Punjab. He further objected to the clause mandating online records of Guru Granth Sahib saroops, warning that such sensitive data could be misused by anti-social elements to identify locations of sacred scriptures and create security threats for gurdwaras. Issuing a stern warning, Giani Gargaj said that if the Punjab Government does not amend the disputed provisions within the stipulated time, a special meeting of the “Panj Singh Sahiban” (five Jathedars) will be convened to decide the future course of action.
