Visiting Unzen Onsen, Japan felt like stepping into another world! 🌋🇯🇵 After driving through steep, winding mountain roads in the dark, we reached this remote volcanic village sitting high on a hill. The moment we arrived, we saw massive clouds of steam and toxic gases rising straight out of the earth — a truly rare geothermal phenomenon that felt both fascinating and scary. At night, we explored the area surrounded by intense heat, boiling steam vents, and glowing mist… and then spent the night in our camper van listening to the sounds of the active volcanic ground beneath us. In the morning, we hiked around the famous Unzen Jigoku (Hell Valley) and saw how geothermal energy is used by locals to cook food, heat water, and even evaporate water to extract natural salt. The ground was extremely hot, and steam vents were everywhere — one of the most unreal natural wonders we have seen in Japan!
