The fake encounter case (1993) In August 2025, a special CBI court convicted five retired Punjab police officers, including Inspector Suba Singh, for their involvement in a 1993 fake encounter in Tarn Taran. The conviction followed allegations that seven people from Rani Vallah village, including four Special Police Officers (SPOs), were illegally detained, tortured, and murdered by the police. Suba Singh was sentenced to life imprisonment for criminal conspiracy, murder, and fabricating evidence. The Patiala jail incident (September 2025) While serving his life sentence, Suba Singh was attacked inside Patiala Central Jail by another inmate, Sandeep Singh (also known as Sunny), who is an accused in the murder case of Shiv Sena leader Sudhir Suri. Suba Singh sustained serious injuries in the attack and later died during treatment at a hospital. Sandeep Singh's family and Sikh organizations have since alleged that he was tortured by jail authorities after the incident. A court-ordered medical examination found that he had sustained eleven injuries.
