ਬੰਦਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਬਹਾਦਰ ਦਾ ਜਨਮ 27 ਅਕਤੂਬਰ 1670 ਨੂੰ ਰਾਜੌਰੀ (ਹੁਣ ਜੰਮੂ ਅਤੇ ਕਸ਼ਮੀਰ ਵਿੱਚ) ਵਿਖੇ ਇੱਕ ਹਿੰਦੂ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਿਸਾਨ ਰਾਮ ਦੇਵ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਲਛਮਣ ਦੇਵ ਦੇ ਰੂਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ। ਸਰੋਤ ਵੱਖ-ਵੱਖ ਤਰੀਕਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਉਸਦੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਭਾਰਦਵਾਜ ਕਬੀਲੇ ਦਾ ਰਾਜਪੂਤ ਜਾਂ ਡੋਗਰਾ ਰਾਜਪੂਤ ਦੱਸਦੇ ਹਨ। ਬੰਦਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਦਾ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਕਾਫ਼ੀ ਗਰੀਬ ਸੀ। ਉਸਦੇ ਸ਼ੁਰੂਆਤੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਬਾਰੇ ਇਸ ਤੱਥ ਤੋਂ ਇਲਾਵਾ ਬਹੁਤ ਕੁਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਕਿ ਬੰਦਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਸ਼ਿਕਾਰ ਅਤੇ ਨਿਸ਼ਾਨੇਬਾਜ਼ੀ ਦਾ ਸ਼ੌਕੀਨ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਉਸਨੇ ਛੋਟੀ ਉਮਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਘੋੜਸਵਾਰੀ, ਕੁਸ਼ਤੀ, ਤੀਰਅੰਦਾਜ਼ੀ ਅਤੇ ਤਲਵਾਰਬਾਜ਼ੀ ਦੀਆਂ ਕਲਾਵਾਂ ਸਿੱਖ ਲਈਆਂ ਸਨ ਅਤੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਜਲਦੀ। ਬੰਦਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਦੇ ਸ਼ੁਰੂਆਤੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਬਾਰੇ ਇੱਕ ਕਹਾਣੀ ਦੇ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਉਹ ਇੱਕ ਵਾਰ 15 ਸਾਲ ਦੀ ਉਮਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਸ਼ਿਕਾਰ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ। ਹਰਨੀ ਦੇ ਮਰਨ ਦਾ ਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ ਬੰਦਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੂੰ ਉਦਾਸ ਕਰ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਸੀ। ਜਦੋਂ ਉਸਨੇ ਹਰਨੀ ਨੂੰ ਕੱਟਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਹਰਨੀ ਦੇ ਦੋ ਬੱਚਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਰਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਜੋ ਅਜੇ ਪੈਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਏ ਸਨ ਤਾਂ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਬਹੁਤ ਦੁੱਖ ਹੋਇਆ। ਇਸ ਘਟਨਾ ਨੇ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਬਹੁਤ ਦੁਖੀ ਕੀਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਬੰਦਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਸੰਸਾਰਿਕ ਮਾਮਲਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਤਿਆਗ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਇੱਕ ਤਪੱਸਵੀ ਬਣ ਗਿਆ। ਉਹ ਜਾਨਕੀ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦ ਨਾਮਕ ਇੱਕ ਸਾਥੀ ਤਪੱਸਵੀ ਦੇ ਸੰਪਰਕ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਇਆ। ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦ ਨੇ ਬੰਦਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ, ਜੋ ਉਸ ਸਮੇਂ ਲਛਮਣ ਦੇਵ ਸੀ, ਬਦਲ ਕੇ ਮਾਧੋ ਦਾਸ ਰੱਖ ਦਿੱਤਾ। ਬੰਦਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਡੇਰਾ (ਮੱਠ) ਸਥਾਪਿਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਕੁਝ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਅਨੁਯਾਈ ਬਣ ਗਿਆ। 1708 ਵਿੱਚ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਿੰਘ ਬੰਦਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਦੇ ਮੱਠ ਵਿੱਚ ਗਏ, ਉਸ ਸਮੇਂ ਮਾਧੋ ਦਾਸ। ਗੁਰੂ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਿੰਘ ਬੰਦਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਦੀ ਸੀਟ 'ਤੇ ਬੈਠ ਗਏ ਜਿੱਥੇ ਬੰਦਾ ਇੱਕ ਸੰਤ ਵਜੋਂ ਬੈਠਦਾ ਸੀ। ਕੁਝ ਸਰੋਤਾਂ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਉੱਥੇ ਬੱਕਰੀਆਂ ਵੀ ਮਾਰੀਆਂ। ਕੀ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ ਬੰਦਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਗੁੱਸੇ ਨਾਲ ਭਰ ਗਿਆ। ਬੰਦਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ "ਜਾਦੂ" ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਕਰਕੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਕੁਰਸੀ ਨੂੰ ਉਲਟਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ, ਪਰ ਕੁਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਇਆ। ਗੁੱਸੇ ਨਾਲ ਭਰਿਆ ਬੰਦਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਗੁਰੂ ਕੋਲ ਚਲਾ ਗਿਆ। ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਦੇਖ ਕੇ ਬੰਦਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਦਾ ਗੁੱਸਾ ਪਿਘਲ ਗਿਆ। ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਲ ਗੱਲਬਾਤ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਬੰਦਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਧਰਮ ਪਰਿਵਰਤਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਛਕ ਕੇ ਖਾਲਸਾ ਬਣ ਗਿਆ। ਮਾਧੋ ਦਾਸ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਬੰਦਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਦਿੱਤਾ। ਬੰਦਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਅਤੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਦੀ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਗਈ। ਜ਼ੋਰਾਵਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਅਤੇ ਫਤਿਹ ਸਿੰਘ ਦੇ ਕਤਲ ਬਾਰੇ ਪਤਾ ਲੱਗਣ 'ਤੇ, ਬੰਦਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਰੋ ਪਿਆ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਗੁਰੂ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਬੰਦਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਹਾ, "ਜਦੋਂ ਜ਼ੁਲਮ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਹਾਵੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾ ਸੰਵੇਦਨਸ਼ੀਲ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦਾ ਫਰਜ਼ ਬਣਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਇਸ ਵਿਰੁੱਧ ਲੜਨ ਅਤੇ ਸੰਘਰਸ਼ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਪਣੀ ਜਾਨ ਵੀ ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ਕਰ ਦੇਣ।" ਬੰਦਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਅਜਿਹਾ ਕਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ ਸੀ। ਬੰਦਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਾਲਮਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਜ਼ਾ ਦੇਣ ਅਤੇ ਆਮ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਬਚਾਉਣ ਦੀ ਇੱਛਾ ਨੂੰ ਪੂਰਾ ਕਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ ਸੀ। Banda Singh Bahadur was born as Lachman Dev in a Hindu family to farmer Ram Dev, at Rajouri (now in Jammu and Kashmir) on 27 October 1670. Sources variously describe his father as a Rajput from the Bhardwaj clan or a Dogra Rajput. Banda Singh's family was quite poor. Not much is known about his early life other than the fact that Banda Singh was fond of hunting and shooting and learned the arts of horse-riding, wrestling, archery, and swordsmanship at a young age and quite quickly. According to a tale about Banda Singh's early life he was once hunting at the age of 15. The sight of the doe dying saddened Banda Singh. He was even deeply hurt when he cut the doe and found two of the doe's babies dying who were not yet born. The event deeply scarred him and led to Banda Singh abandoning worldly affairs and becoming an ascetic. He came into contact of a fellow ascetic named Janaki Prasad. Prasad changed Banda Singh's name, which at the time was Lachman Dev, into Madho Das. Banda Singh established his own Dera (monastery) and took upon a following of some men. Meeting Guru Gobind Singh In 1708 Guru Gobind Singh went to the monastery of Banda Singh, at the time Madho Das. Guru Gobind Singh sat on Banda Singh's seat where the Banda would sit as a saint. According to some sources Guru Gobind Singh also killed the goats there. Upon hearing what happened Banda Singh was filled with rage. Banda Singh used his "magic" to flip the chair the Guru sat on, but nothing happened. Filled with rage Banda Singh made his way to the Guru. Upon seeing the Guru Banda Singh's rage melted. After a conversation with the Guru Banda Singh converted and took Amrit becoming a Khalsa. Madho Das was named Banda Singh by the Guru. Banda Singh was taught in Gurbani and Sikh history. Upon learning of the killing of Zorawar Singh and Fateh Singh, Banda Singh is said to have cried. Guru Gobind Singh told Banda Singh, "When tyranny had overtaken men, it was the duty off the more sensitive to fight against it and even to lay down their life in the struggle". Banda Singh wanted to do such. Banda Singh wished to fulfil Guru Gobind Singh's wish of punishing tyrants and saving the commoners.
