The trail up to the elbow lake is very well maintained, but has very steep elevation throughout. Elbow Lake is one of the most beautiful lake we have seen so far. There is also an option of backcountry camping at Elbow Lake. Elbow lake is the start point of Elbow River, which feeds water to city of Calgary. After the elbow Lake, the trail is not much maintained and you have to follow a creek coming from the glacier. The trail to the glacier goes through the forest and has some scramble part as well. Rae glacier is one of the most easterly glacier in the Rocky Mountains and is almost on the verge of extinction due to the warning and melting of the ice.
