But even by those standards, the storm unleashed by Navjot Kaur Sidhu’s infamous remark that “one needs a suitcase of Rs 500 crore to become Punjab’s chief minister” has left the Congress shaken. What began as an offhand comment has spiralled into a full-blown crisis for a party already struggling to keep its flock together in the state. Navjot Kaur, a former MLA and wife of former state Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu, made the remark last week. She appeared speaking more from frustration than as strategy, explaining why her husband had stepped away from active politics. But her words, sharp and unfiltered, carried the unmistakable tone of someone who had perhaps seen too much from too close. Within hours, television studios were looping the clip and WhatsApp groups were abuzz. The remark had gone viral. Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, who has spent much of his tenure firefighting internal rebellions and managing the egos of senior leaders, knew the party could not sit still. On December 8, he announced Navjot Kaur’s suspension from the party’s primary membership for “gross indiscipline and defamatory remarks”. The statement was brief but loaded. It was Warring’s way of showing that party indiscipline would not be tolerated.
