During the Battle of Chamkaur, Guru Gobind Singh Ji was ordered by the Panj Piare (the five beloved ones) to leave the fort for the survival of the Panth. To deceive the encircling Mughal forces, a Sikh who closely resembled the Guru stayed behind, wearing the Guru's own robes, armor, and plume (Kalgi). Account for Bhai Sangat Singh: Most widely accepted Sikh traditions and historians state that Bhai Sangat Singh was the one who wore the Guru's attire. He remained in the fort, appearing on the battlements to trick the Mughals into thinking the Guru was still present, and eventually attained martyrdom while fighting. Account for Bhai Jiwan Singh: Some traditions, particularly within the Mazhabi Sikh community, suggest that Bhai Jiwan Singh (Bhai Jaita) was the one who received the Guru's garments and Kalgi at Chamkaur. Proponents of this view point to Gurdwara Sahibs in Chamkaur that commemorate his sacrifice at that specific location.
